It is necessary to include the sodium content of food on the Nutrition Information Panel in New Zealand and Australia.
The Nutrition Information Panel (food label) on packaged foods tells you how much sodium (and other nutrients) is in the food.
Salt or sodium chloride contains two elements – 40% sodium and 60% chloride.
Note sodium is on the NIP not salt, therefore to convert back to salt:
salt (mg) = sodium (mg)/0.40
The sodium content on the NIP may be in mg (1000mg = 1g)
World Health Organisation recommended 2g (2000mg) of sodium per day, this equates to 5g (5000mg) of salt per day
